The Malaga humanist, scientist and chemist Abás Ibn Firnas invented the hang-glider, a large fabric structure for gliding and motor-less flight after take-off from a high point.
Distances of almost 1,000 kilometres have been covered using this apparatus, making use of air currents and thermals which the pilot uses to stay up for long periods and to carry out acrobatic manoeuvres.
Besides the fabric that makes up the wing, the hang-glider also comprises an aluminium structure that supports the sail, with the pilot held in the centre in a harness. The pilot is usually in a prone posture, using his/her body weight to make changes in direction.
There are two normal ways to take off: one is aerotow behind a powered aircraft, the other is on foot, running down a slope until the hang-glider takes off.
Where to go Hang-Gliding
Andalusia's many mountains offer a host of options for hang-gliding and other aerial sports.
Many of the specialist schools to be found around the eight provinces of Andalusia organise courses for beginners and more expert pilots alike.
El Bosque, Almuñécar, Sierra de Lújar and Sierra Morena are some of the places where you can try this amazing sport while you enjoy stunning natural surroundings.
Precautions and recommendation
Before launching in a hang-glider you should check the wings and other equipment. You also need to know the wind conditions, wind speed and direction, as well as the terrain you will be flying over, to check whether there are any obstacles that could interrupt or disrupt your gliding.
As with any outdoor activity, you should also find out the meteorological conditions in the area. If winds are strong and gusty then it is better not to fly.
Another good idea is to make a prior flight plan and follow it subsequently. The condition of the wing also needs to be checked constantly, to make sure it is not damaged during flight.
We suggest you never fly alone. If there is someone with you they can help or get help if necessary.
Necessary equipment
The essential equipment for hang-gliding comprises harness, helmet, emergency parachute and double security harness attachment.
These can be complemented by recommended accessories comprising a radio, suitable clothing with flight suit, gloves, glasses and protective boots, along with a barometer and compass which provide useful information for safe flight.
